Kenae Turner
Elizabeth City State University, Class of 2024
Major: Birth Through Kindergarten
What is your major?

My name is Kenae Turner. I am a 21 year-old junior, majoring in Birth Through Kindergarten.
What did you think about college before you attended?

In all honesty, I was not too fond of the idea of going to college. It was not until I taught English abroad in Shenzhen, China, that I realized that teaching young children is what I want to do in life. Hence, as soon as I returned from my travels, I enrolled in community college and later transferred to an HBCU.

How do you think being a first generation student has affected your college experience?

Being a first generation student has positively affected my college experience. I have been provided much support, love, encouragement, and motivation. I genuinely appreciate my college community as I found out that many of my peers and classmates are first-generation students as well. It helps to know that you have others like you working alongside you.
What do you love about your college?

What I love about my college is that it is small; therefore, the college community truly feels like a family. Faculty and students are caring, helpful, patient, and truly only want the best for you.
What does it mean to you to have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar?
Being a Renaissance Scholar has made a positive astronomical difference in my college journey and, honestly, my life as a whole. Hence, it means a lot to me that I have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar. I am truly grateful for all individuals who supported me in becoming a part of this wonderful program.

What advice would you give a high school student preparing for college?

I would advise and encourage high school students to stay focused and to not let anyone distract or deter them from achieving their aspirations.

Any advice for students applying for the Renaissance Scholars Program?

Please be yourself and refrain from being intimidated and comparing yourself with others.
