Marcos Romero-Turner

Warner Pacific University, Class of 2023

Social Entrepreneurship

What is your major and why did you pick it?

My major is Social Entrepreneurship. When I first toured Warner Pacific, a few years prior to knowing I was going to attend the University, I noticed that this was one of their newest majors and it spoke to me. I never heard of it before, but it was definitely something I wanted to learn more about and pursue.

What did you think about college before you attended?

College was only a thought and dream of mine so to speak. Going into high school, I knew I always wanted to go to college, but I didn’t think I ever could because I, nor my family could afford it. However, when senior year came around, I took all the time to prepare to help make it a reality while also graduating a mid year early so I was for certain that I wanted to go, I just had to work hard for scholarships. Now that I am here, I have no regrets. It still can be surreal from time to time, like, “wow, I am really here right now,” but the fact that everyday I am making history in my family and for my future generations, that is what makes my perspective so open about it all.

How do you think being a first-generation student has affected your college experience?

It is my motivation everyday. So, I think it has affected my experience greatly. Even when I get swamped with homework, low on sleep, overwhelmed here and there, I still do my best to remind myself that I am the first and I am creating the path. Personally, I think it is a big honor and an accolade for me being the first and it has helped my experience.

What do you love about your university?

I love that it is a small, local and faith-based community. Warner Pacific has made my college experience really fun and enjoyable. The family-like connections, diversity and the fact that I can be myself here is amazing. I am able to also make an impact on campus, by being a leader and feeling heard.

How has the experience of starting somewhere new been for you?

It has been an exciting and anxious experience starting somewhere new. I learned that it is OK to fail, and that you should embrace it. Likewise, coming into Warner I had a good feeling because it felt like home. It felt like my high school experience. I came from a very small alternative high school (Mt. Scott Learning Centers) that had good core values, focused on community engagement and overall assisted students with one on one learning, to a University that does the same. It felt like a bigger Mt. Scott.

What is your favorite subject or class you’ve taken?

By far, my favorite subjects have to be a mix between either my Social Entrepreneurship courses or Sociology courses.

What has been the most impactful experience during your time in college?

The most impactful experiences so far during my time in college have to be taking part in tutoring, helping other students succeed, and playing a big role in reviving the business club for the University. In part of reviving the club, I also entered a business competition and resulted in getting 3rd place while starting a real business which was a very good eye opener for me.

Have there been any resources on or off campus that you have utilized in times of struggle?

Definitely. The business departments on campus have been extremely helpful along with everyone behind the Renaissance Foundation for off campus resources that I have utilized in time of need. One for example, Diana Hoff has been a huge help for me throughout my college journey and I can’t thank her enough for supporting me.

If you have ever attended our scholarship brunches or other scholar events, how did those go for you?

Brunches and get-togethers were always my favorite when I got the chance to attend- I wouldn’t miss it! I enjoyed meeting the other scholars and getting to know them along with getting to know the people involved with Renaissance.

What does it mean to you to have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar?

To be a Renaissance Scholar, it means a whole lot to me. Being chosen has not only been life changing for me, but it also has given me a lot of confidence and comfort while tackling the challenges of higher education. I would not take it for granted.

Any advice for students applying for the Renaissance Scholars program?

Go for it, shoot for the stars. Never be too afraid to be yourself, and embrace who you are and what brought you to this moment. I’ve learned that when you embrace your story, it can help not only inspire many others, but it can showcase your vulnerability and make an impact.

Are you a Renaissance Scholar? Current scholars and alumni can share their stories here.
