What advice would you give a high school student preparing for college?

A piece of advice that I would give to a high school student is to not believe what others tell you. Yes, we get to experience real world in college, but you can experience the real world outside of college too. I met awesome people who are now my friends, but it was only possible when I reached out and when I wanted to get involved.

How do you think being a first generation student has affected your college experience?

Being the first generation student meant that I had the responsibility of being an idol for my siblings. As a first generation student, I was trying to get as involved in school as I can to leave the impression for others to come. I was working while being a full time student and I am involved in different diversity clubs to being able to meet new people.

What do you love about your college?

What I love about my college is that we get to hold events and represent our cultures. The professors are above and beyond and are willing to help if asked.

What does it mean to you to have been chosen as a Renaissance Scholar?

I felt honored and felt lucky to be chosen as a Renaissance Scholar. Being a scholar means a lot, because I didn’t face the same problem as others did with finance. I get to graduate debt-free and it’s all thanks to Renaissance.

What has been the most impactful experience or class during your time in college?

Not impactful, but a memorable experience was when I was photographed for an advertisement. I never thought in my life that my picture would be used in a school calendar. It’s one of my best memories.

Any advice for students applying for the Renaissance Scholars Program?

Keep going and never give up.
